To celebrate Gordie "Mr. Hockey" Howe's Birthday, we are launching The Howe Legacy: Defense Edition Quest, where you need to freeze highlights from 32 defensemen, the number of seasons Gordie played in the NHL. The defensemen position honors his son, Hall of Famer Mark Howe, who stars as the commentator of the Gordie Howe - The Greatest Achievements highlight. Each collector who completes this quest will receive a Light the Lamp Quest Reward Pack (Limited), and 2 lucky collectors will receive either an autographed Gordie Howe, or Mark Howe trading card. In what has been a resurgence year for three-time James Norris Memorial Trophy winner Erik Karlsson, he makes a great individual effort on this play to earn a beautiful assist. Having his best season wearing a San Jose Sharks uniform, the smooth-skating Karlsson begins the play off the faceoff with a quick move at the blueline to evade the defender. He then skates the puck down near the corner before looping back up to the point. Not only does he create more space for himself but now all eyes are on Karlsson, which creates a wide-open Steven Lorentz who Karlsson finds for the goal. It has been a remarkable year statistically for Karlsson having bested all of his previous seasons in points.

With his 25th goal of the season and second of the game, San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson reached 100 points in a season for the first time in his career. At age 32, Karlsson becomes the first defenseman to record 100+ points in a season at age 30 or older. Overall, he is the sixth different defenseman in NHL history to hit the mark at any age, following Bobby Orr (6x), Paul Coffey (5x), Brian Leetch, Al MacInnis and Denis Potvin. On the milestone play, Karlsson receives a pass from teammate Tomas Hertl, changes the angle of his shot to use the goaltender screen to his advantage and shoots the puck through traffic into the net.

On the play, it begins with Nico Hischier moving the puck to Jesper Bratt who gains the blueline. Bratt then buys some time and spins to pass the puck over to the trailing Hamilton who roofs it top shelf over the glove of Igor Shesterkin. The Devils would later go on to win the series in seven games.

Capitalizing on the opportunity, Hedman joins the rush leading to the creation of a 3-on-1 alongside Vincent Lecavalier and Alex Tanguay. In Game 3 of the First Round of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Cale Makar made his NHL debut in the postseason with the series tied 1-1. His impact was immediate, as he swiftly etched his name onto the scoresheet by notching his inaugural NHL goal during the first period, ultimately standing as the decisive tally that secured the victory. The play unfolded with Makar shadowing the offensive rush up the ice spearheaded by Nathan MacKinnon. Adam Fox

With just under three minutes remaining in the game while holding a one-goal lead, Adam Fox begins with a great defensive read intercepting a shot-pass right in front of the New York Rangers net. Later on the same shift, the Rangers break out of their zone ending up on a two-on-one with a fatigued Tampa Bay Lightning squad on the ice. Fox, with fresher legs, joins the rush where he banks home the rebound off of Chris Kreider’s shot for his first career goal. The insurance marker padded the Rangers lead by two late in the third period. Fox had an impressive rookie season in 2019-20 amassing 42 points and a plus-22 rating in 70 games played.

With a shot that registered at 100.37 mph, Vancouver Canucks defenseman Filip Hronek scored a tying goal during a two-man advantage in an eventual multi-goal comeback win. Hronek received a pass right in the wheelhouse from partner Quinn Hughes, where he teed it up perfectly to send the puck into the net through a screen. The goal was Hronek’s first of the season and came in the last contest of an 11-game point streak which tied the longest ever by a Canucks defenseman.

Kaiden Guhle

Scott Niedermayer

During the 1995 Stanley Cup Final, the smooth-skating Scott Niedermayer scores a huge tying goal in Game 2 versus the Detroit Red Wings. Down 2-1 with just over ten minutes remaining in the third period, Niedermayer goes end-to-end skating swiftly through the Detroit players before he pulls up near the top of the circles to send a wrister that goes wide. Bouncing off the boards, the puck kicks back out to the front where Niedermayer follows up to bank it home. The goal on the road tied the game and propelled New Jersey to a victory for a 2-0 series lead. The Devils would later clinch the series at home with a 4-0 sweep for their first ever Stanley Cup.

Ray Bourque

After an illustrious career spanning 22 seasons, Ray Bourque finally achieved the ultimate triumph of hoisting the Stanley Cup. At the age of 40, in what would be his final year in professional hockey, Bourque fulfilled his long-standing dream of winning this highly coveted trophy. This remarkable achievement added to the numerous accolades he had already earned, including holding the record for the most goals, assists and points in NHL history by a defenseman, along with five Norris Trophy awards. Leading up to this historic victory, Bourque showcased his invaluable contributions by scoring the game-winning goal during Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final. With the game tied and a power play in progress, a crucial faceoff ensued in the early moments of the third period. Bourque skillfully seized control of the puck after it was won back to him, swiftly gliding towards the center of the ice before unleashing a powerful slapshot that flew past the formidable Martin Brodeur. Then, on June 9, 2001, following a resounding 3-1 victory by the Colorado Avalanche in Game 7, team captain Joe Sakic received the coveted Stanley Cup from Commissioner Gary Bettman. In a deeply significant gesture, Sakic promptly skated over to Bourque, personally handing off the cherished trophy to the deserving veteran. With under a minute remaining in the second period, K'Andre Miller begins the play with a stretch pass to Chris Kreider.
