Mike Gartner, who began his NHL journey with the Capitals and spent parts of 10 seasons in Washington, was renowned for his blazing speed and scoring prowess. Over 19 seasons, the electrifying right winger tallied an incredible 708 goals and 1,335 points. In a January 1989 game against the New Jersey Devils, Gartner showcased the skills that defined his career. Blowing past a defender, he sped in on a breakaway and unleashed a pinpoint shot to light the lamp—his first of two goals that night. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001, Gartner’s No. 11 jersey now hangs proudly in the Washington rafters.
