On Dec. 23, 2022, Alex Ovechkin surpassed “Mr. Hockey,” Gordie Howe, for second place on the NHL’s all-time goals list behind “The Great One,” Wayne Gretzky. “The Great 8” has had a remarkable career having won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy on nine occasions – the most any NHL player has finished as single-season goals leader. Ovechkin tops a list of only three players to lead the League in goals more than five times, the others being Bobby Hull (7x) and Phil Esposito (6x). For his first goal of the game (801), the play begins with Ovechkin feeding the puck to teammate Ryan Strome on the far side in the neutral zone. As Strome gains the blue line, Ovechkin trails the play getting the drop pass where he walks it in and zips it five-hole past the netminder. In the final play, Ovechkin gains the blue line with the puck where he has a clear shot at the empty net. Instead, he pulls up and passes it over to longtime teammate Evgeny Kuznetsov. Kuznetsov dishes it back to Ovechkin where he spins alongside the boards and throws it into the empty net in front of an elated home crowd, with his teammates then flooding the ice in celebration.
