Lane Hutson claimed the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie for the 2024-25 season, tying Larry Murphy’s record for most assists by a rookie defenseman (60 in 1980-81). He also became the first blueliner to surpass 60 points as a rookie since Nicklas Lidstrom (60 in 1991-92) and matched Phil Housley (66 in 1982-83) for fourth-most points by a rookie defenseman in NHL history. Hutson’s dynamic skating and playmaking produced countless highlights throughout his debut season. In one memorable moment, he netted his first NHL goal by beating Winnipeg netminder Connor Hellebuyck (winner of the Hart Trophy, Vezina Trophy and William M. Jennings Trophy in 2024-25). Later, in a critical playoff push, Hutson delivered a pinpoint cross-ice pass to Nick Suzuki for the game-winning goal against the defending Stanley Cup champions. Near season’s end, with playoff hopes on the line, Hutson scored a jaw-dropping go-ahead goal against Philadelphia. Starting behind his own net, he weaved through defenders coast-to-coast before roofing a sharp-angle shot top shelf—a fitting exclamation point on an incredible rookie campaign.
