Goal vs DET | 3rd Period | Oct 13, 1979

In just his second NHL game, Mark Messier scored the first goal of his career. Late in the third period, with the Oilers down by a goal, Messier collected the puck behind the net following a strong Oilers forecheck. He threw a backhand pass to the front of the net, where it deflected off a Red Wings defender’s skate and into the net for the game-tying goal. Messier spent the first 12 of his 25 NHL seasons with the Oilers, winning five of his six Stanley Cup championships. Among the other awards he won during his Hall of Fame career were two Hart Trophies and the 1984 Conn Smythe Trophy.
