The 1990-91 season was remarkable for Brett Hull. Coming off a season where he scored 72 goals and totaled 113 points, Hull surpassed his personal best with 86 goals and 131 points, earning the Hart Trophy. Entering the January 25, 1991 contest in Detroit, which was Hull’s 49th game of the season, he scored twice, becoming just the third player in NHL history (joining Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux) to net 50 goals in fewer than 50 games and the fifth player to achieve 50 goals in 50 team games or less. His 49th goal came from his signature heavy slapshot during a power play, blasting it past the goalie. He then scored his 50th goal with a wrist shot, also on a power play. The Detroit crowd acknowledged his achievement, greeting Hull with cheers despite him being an opponent.
