During Game 4 of the 1996 Western Conference Semifinals, Joe Sakic scored a pivotal goal for the Colorado Avalanche on the road in Chicago to even up the series. Positioned at the side of the net, Sakic redirects Alexei Gusarov’s pass from the point for the game winner in triple overtime. Sakic’s overtime goal was his second of the game. Colorado successfully concluded the series against the Chicago Blackhawks in six games. They continued their playoff journey by overcoming the Detroit Red Wings in the subsequent series. Ultimately, they secured their first-ever Stanley Cup victory by defeating the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final. Sakic was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy that year and led all playoff performers in both points (34) and goals (18) of which six were game winners.
