Scott Walker scored the first-ever NHL regular season goal outside of North America during the first of two contests held in Tokyo, Japan, between the Vancouver Canucks and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Midway through the first period, Walker capitalized on a Ducks turnover, intercepting an errant pass and skating it to the net, where he tucked a backhander past the netminder.
